Elizabeth Olds’ color lithograph, “Bike Race,” captures the dynamism of sport, but also subtly reflects the socio-political currents of its time. As one of the few women working within the male-dominated realm of social realism, Olds often chose subjects that highlighted everyday life and labor. Here, the rhythmic intensity of the cyclists contrasts with the more static, suit-clad spectators. Olds was deeply committed to making art accessible to all, she believed it should reflect the lives and experiences of ordinary people. The print medium allowed her to produce affordable art, reaching audiences beyond the traditional gallery setting. The inclusion of Black spectators amidst a largely white crowd hints at the changing demographics and social integration that were slowly emerging in American society. Olds invites us to consider who gets to participate and who gets to watch, subtly prompting us to reflect on the broader social dynamics at play.
