George Loughridge made this drawing of a crock, we don't know when, but the earth tones and careful shading suggest a patient approach to observation and recording. There's a clear love for the process of looking closely, and translating what's seen into a new form. The texture of the crock, that slightly rough, porous surface, it's all there in the drawing, achieved with such simple means! And then, that single fish motif, such a subtle blue. Notice how it's not just painted on, but seems embedded, almost grown out from the clay. It’s a beautifully understated moment of animation. The whole piece feels incredibly grounded, solid, but with this one element of playful, imaginative freedom. It reminds me a little of some of Morandi’s still life paintings, where everyday objects become these monumental, almost spiritual forms through careful observation and arrangement. Both artists share a sense of quiet contemplation, finding extraordinary beauty in the ordinary.
