Editor: Here we have Jiang Tingxi’s "Small Bird Pursuing an Insect Amidst Roses," held at the Harvard Art Museums. It's lovely, isn't it? The fan shape and the delicate brushwork create such a sense of lightness. What do you see in the composition? Curator: Observe how the artist contrasts the hard, radial lines of the fan with the organic, flowing lines of the rose branches and bird's flight. The color palette is restrained, emphasizing the blue ground, which in turn accentuates the texture of the paper support itself. The composition creates an interesting tension between the geometric and the natural. Editor: That's fascinating. I hadn't considered how the fan's structure itself becomes a key part of the artwork's language. Curator: Precisely. Note how the artist uses the fan's format, with its inherent limitations, to create a dialogue between surface, structure and image. Editor: Thank you; I'll definitely look at fan paintings differently now.
