Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this sketch of hanging lamps, sometime between the late 19th and early 20th century, using graphite on paper. Imagine him there, working out his ideas in real time. The lines are tentative, searching, like he's feeling his way through the design. He's mapping out how the light might filter and fall. I wonder what kind of space he envisioned these lamps inhabiting? The repetition of shapes, the careful measurements jotted down – it’s like he's building a world, piece by piece, right there on the page. You can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the paper, refining and adjusting, trying to capture the essence of light and form. There's a conversation happening here, between the artist and the page, each mark informing the next. And now, years later, we get to join that conversation, bringing our own perspectives and experiences to the mix. It's a beautiful thing, this ongoing dialogue between artists and viewers, across time and space.
