Jost Amman created this Design for a Large Goblet during the late 16th century. Executed in pen and black ink, the drawing presents a symmetrical, multi-tiered structure that rises from a heavily ornamented base to a diminutive human figure at its apex. Notice how Amman employs a formal language of balance and proportion. The goblet's shape is defined by a series of horizontal layers—circular elements interlock with cylindrical forms—creating a visual rhythm that is both stable and ascending. The surface is far from being simple: look at the highly decorative friezes, punctuated with swirling foliage and grotesque masks. The design reflects a cultural preoccupation with opulence and display. The goblet, far from being a mere functional object, is conceived as a symbol of status. The drawing uses semiotic codes to communicate power, prestige and wealth. The careful rendering of texture and detail serves not just an aesthetic purpose, but also speaks to the goblet's intended use as a medium for social and political expression.
