Simonau & Toovey made this reproduction of the tenth and last print from the series The Triumph of Christ, based on Joos Lambrecht, sometime in the past. The image is striking for its explicit theology. Made in the Netherlands in the 16th century, the original woodcut visualizes Christian doctrine through Biblical imagery. Adam and Eve stand with their hands clasped in prayer, as Moses and other figures bear the Ark of the Covenant and the tablets of the Law, while an angel bearing a cross hovers above. The work's intent seems to be about the supersession of the Old Testament by the New. It is possible to see the image as conservative, emphasizing traditional Christian values and beliefs, and the establishment of religious institutions. To understand an image like this more fully, historians can look into the lives of both the artists and their audiences. Social and institutional contexts always shape how we look at, and understand art.
