Jean-Jacques Henner painted this version of Susannah at her bath using oil on canvas. At first glance, the eye is drawn to the pale flesh tones of Susannah against the dark, brooding background. Henner’s painting invokes the biblical tale of Susannah, observed in her privacy by lecherous elders. The artist plays with the semiotic tension between visibility and concealment. The female form is deliberately placed in the center and lit to draw the viewer’s eye. The dense, dark foliage at the upper corners and right side obscure more than they reveal. Note how the sharp architectural lines on the right compete with the fluid organic lines of Susannah’s body to create a subtle dissonance. The ‘gaze’ in the artwork seems to operate on multiple levels. Is the viewer an unwilling participant, or just another voyeuristic elder? It reminds us that the act of viewing art is never neutral, but always implicated in complex social and power dynamics.
