This photograph shows us Adrianus van der Grient’s studio, and it gives off a strong sense of the artist at work! The scene is full, packed with easels holding various works. The surfaces are alive with texture and the potential for more. I imagine Van der Grient moving among these works, considering the relationships between them, maybe resolving one painting before turning to another. He must have been in a constant state of looking and responding. You know, a lot of being an artist is just that: responding. Painters often engage in a kind of call and response with their own work, or maybe with other painter’s work that hangs nearby. I wonder, who was Van der Grient in conversation with at this moment? I’m sure whatever it was, that conversation continues through today.
