This sketchbook page was made by J.A. Jerichau II, probably with ink and watercolour. It has a real sense of trying things out, seeing where a line can go. Look at the figure at the top. It’s got this bold red cloak, but the lines around it are sketchy, like the artist is thinking through the form as they go. The colours are watery and thin, layered in places to build up depth, but elsewhere they let the paper breathe through. It’s like the artist is letting the process be visible, not trying to hide the thinking behind the image. And down below, the buildings are just these ghostly shapes, barely there. I love the way the blue wash for the sky just bleeds into the paper, giving the whole thing this dreamy, unfinished quality. You can really see the ghost of Whistler in that lower sketch. It reminds me that art is always a conversation, a way of seeing and responding to what’s come before, always open to new possibilities.
