This print by J. Robyn depicts the seven planets known at the time, each represented by a classical deity, arranged on a stepped pyramid. Here we see Saturnus, Jupter, Mars, Sol, Venus, Mercurius, and Luna, all arranged in a hierarchy. The symbolism is rich with classical and astrological references. Sol, the sun, is crowned with radiant light, embodying enlightenment, similar to how Apollo is often depicted. Luna, the moon, has a crescent moon in her hair, linking her to cycles and the subconscious, and evoking a sense of femininity. Mercurius holds a caduceus, a symbol of commerce and negotiation. Consider how these motifs reappear throughout art history, even evolving in form. The winged helmet of Mercury, for instance, can be traced back to Hermes in ancient Greek art. These images are not static, but in motion across time, shifting in meaning to echo collective memory. Like a dream, they resurface and evolve, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level.
