Ludwig Reiner made this etching, New York Towers from Brooklyn Bridge. It's a little sepia toned scene. The method he used to create the print reminds me of the way I build up layers in my paintings - he worked and reworked the plate to get that sense of depth. I'm wondering if Reiner was thinking about the passage of time, the way buildings emerge from the mist and fog? What was he thinking when he pulled the print, and did it match what he had intended? The long lines of the bridge cutting through the image make me think of how a painter like Agnes Martin used line to create space, and the way she evoked a sense of quiet contemplation through minimal mark making.
