Pamela Bianco made this print, "Aquarium," using a painstaking process of engraving. Look closely and you'll notice the entire image is composed of tiny marks, each one carefully incised to build up areas of light and shadow. The density of these lines determines the tonal range, creating depth and texture. This demanding method requires immense patience and control, forcing the artist to think sculpturally, in reverse. Every area of the composition has to be carefully worked out in advance. The choice of engraving – traditionally associated with reproduction – suggests a democratic impulse, a desire to make her art accessible. Yet, the sheer labor involved complicates this intention. Bianco has imbued the print with an undeniable aura of preciousness. Ultimately, it’s the marriage of material, process, and context that elevates "Aquarium" beyond mere representation, inviting us to appreciate the artistry inherent in skilled making.
