Editor: Okay, so next up we have "Wolf en Gerechtigheid," which translates to "Wolf and Justice," an engraving from somewhere between 1721 and 1756, currently at the Rijksmuseum. It's quite detailed, with lots of figures enclosed in a swirling frame. It feels very… allegorical, weighty, even. What catches your eye when you look at it? Curator: It's interesting you say weighty because it strikes me as playful despite its rather serious theme. Notice the frame itself, almost exuberantly Baroque, pushing against the boundaries of the composition. That tension between frivolity and solemnity is key, I think. What do you make of the central figure? The one seemingly enthroned? Editor: She definitely looks important, holding some kind of scepter… is that Justice herself? Or is it something else entirely? Curator: Justice is a good guess! This print operates as an allegory, personifying concepts like justice and piety. Justice is indeed likely represented there, presiding over earthly affairs. Consider, too, how the other figures interact. The one slumped at her feet. The ones nestled amongst themselves. And even those framing vignettes… they're all part of a larger symbolic puzzle. The text too offers some insights! Have you had a look? Editor: Ah, I missed the text! I will now. It adds another layer. This engraving seems more than just decorative; it is packed with meaning. I realize the way it asks the viewer to read it slowly, piece by piece. It certainly does require time. Curator: Absolutely, and those hidden depths make it enduring. It is a visual poem almost! Perhaps it would do us all good to dedicate this sort of prolonged study to everything we see and experience! Editor: Agreed! I will now see Baroque engravings with new eyes, that’s for certain.
