De Ruyter and Meijer created “De kapitein en het kaboutermannetje," a whimsical cartoon strip with no indicated date. The piece unfolds as a series of vignettes which hint at the playful, if somewhat mischievous, relationship between a captain and a gnome. The characters in the artwork evoke the dynamics of power and the disruption of social norms. The captain, presumably a figure of authority, is constantly being pranked, which suggests a subversive narrative that undermines hierarchical structures. The gnome, impish and unpredictable, becomes a symbol of resistance against established order. The artwork carries the emotional undercurrents of both humor and discomfort. On one hand, the playful pranks invite laughter. On the other, they cause a feeling of unease, touching on the disruption of societal expectations. "De kapitein en het kaboutermannetje" thus creates a space where traditional power structures are questioned, inviting us to reflect on the dynamics of authority.
