Curatorial notes
This medal was created by Johan Philip Menger in 1877 to celebrate the centennial of the Dutch Society for the Promotion of Industry. On one side, a classical female figure stands, reminiscent of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. She extends a laurel wreath. Laurel wreaths, symbols of triumph and immortality, have adorned victors and heroes since antiquity, from ancient Greece to the Roman Empire. The shield bearing the Dutch coat of arms connects this classical figure to the specific cultural context of the Netherlands. This juxtaposition highlights a recurring theme: how ancient symbols are adapted and reinterpreted across different eras. The act of bestowing a wreath speaks to a deep-seated human desire for recognition and honor, a powerful emotion that transcends time. Consider the cyclical nature of symbols – their resurgence, evolution, and new meanings in different historical contexts.
