Erich Wichmann drew "The New Generation That Is Coming" with graphite, probably in 1923. The smudgy marks and soft gradations give it this dreamy quality. It makes you feel like you're peering into someone's thoughts. There's something so compelling about the way the head just melts into the elongated neck and arm. It’s like the figure is lost in contemplation, almost dissolving into the background. See how the graphite is layered to create depth, but also how the paper shines through? This adds a sense of vulnerability. It's as if the artist is revealing a raw, unfiltered emotion. It reminds me a little of Odilon Redon's symbolist drawings, where figures emerge from hazy, undefined spaces. The ambiguity of the image is really what gets me. Is this a figure of hope or despair? It's this openness that makes the drawing so engaging.
