John Hultberg made this painting, Incredible Speed, using black and white. There's so much drama in this artwork, I can just imagine Hultberg moving swiftly, his brushstrokes like gusts of wind. Looking at the contrasting forms, I get a sense of an artist trying to capture something that's always shifting and emerging. He’s laying down marks as quickly as he can, wrestling with the image. I sympathize with that, it’s about trying to keep up. The layering gives the whole painting depth and mystery. I love that he embraces the unpredictable nature of the medium. It’s like he's saying, "I don't have all the answers, but I'm going to keep pushing." There's an ongoing exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. And the artist’s way of seeing comes through in every stroke. I think that painting offers us different ways of thinking and experiencing the world.
