Jacob Cats made this watercolor and pen drawing, titled “Spring, Morning and Earth,” sometime in the late eighteenth century. It presents an idealized vision of the Dutch countryside. Here, nature and culture are carefully balanced. Though not in the geometric style of the formal gardens enjoyed by the aristocracy, this landscape also differs from the uncultivated wilderness. The farm plots are well ordered and prosperous. The peasants and animals seem content. Yet, the artist has carefully positioned the viewer outside this harmonious scene, as if to suggest its remoteness. We can consider this drawing as a cultural document. It reflects an emerging conception of nature as a space set apart from the everyday, a space for either scientific study or aesthetic contemplation. To gain a deeper understanding, scholars turn to sources like estate inventories, local histories, and agricultural surveys. Through these resources, we can explore the historical relationships between the natural world, social structures, and the evolving role of art.
