This printed cotton, designed by Julie C. Brush, is a fascinating dance between intention and accident. The colors, a muted purple and a soft teal, feel both deliberate and dreamlike. It’s like looking at a textile through a vintage lens. Up close, the textures become a whole other story. The purple background almost vibrates with tiny details, creating this optical hum, like the fuzziness of an old photograph. Then your eye is drawn to the teal motifs, each one slightly different, imperfect. There’s a beautiful tension between the regularity of the pattern and the little quirks that make it human. I'm reminded of Anni Albers, who also blurred the lines between craft and fine art. Like Albers, Brush invites us to consider the beauty of the handmade. The conversations and the exchanges in art over time are endless! What is fixed anyway? What do you see?
