Curatorial notes

Olga Boznanska painted this portrait of Helena Zielińska using oil on canvas, and the overall effect is of subdued warmth. The colour palette is dominated by earthy browns and muted tones which creates an intimate and contemplative mood. Boznanska’s application of paint is loose and expressive. She subtly models forms and contours using layers of colour, allowing shapes to emerge from a diffused haze. The background melts into the figure of the sitter so that the dog becomes a focal point. This gives the painting an unfinished quality, almost as though the subject exists in a state of becoming. What's remarkable is how Boznanska plays with the tension between representation and abstraction. The visible brushstrokes and indistinct forms challenge traditional ideas of portraiture, suggesting that identity is fluid and multifaceted. It is through this technique that the portrait transcends being just a likeness, becoming instead an exploration of perception and subjective experience.
