Curator: This somber scene before us is "Amy Robsart" by William Frederick Yeames. Painted in a large format, it hangs in the Tate collection. Editor: Immediately, I'm struck by the stark contrast between the lifeless body and those figures on the stairs—the weight of the drama is heavy. Curator: Indeed. Yeames recreates the mysterious death of Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. Notice the careful rendering of her dress, the crisp folds of the fabric as it pools around her. Editor: It's a melodramatic rendering of power, privilege, and suspicion. The starkness of the stairs leading upward, built of hewn wood, provides a backdrop for this woman’s fate. Curator: Absolutely. The play of light and shadow seems to intensify the mystery, and the averted gaze of the figures above leaves so much open to interpretation. What do they know, or think they know? Editor: Ultimately, it's about the materials—the paint, the canvas—used to depict a story of speculation and intrigue, a historical moment rendered in consumable form. Curator: It's a chilling scene, immortalized through Yeames' interpretation. Editor: Indeed—art as a tool for capturing, and perhaps even judging, history.

This painting shows the death of Amy Robsart. She was the wife of Robert Dudley, a ‘favourite’ of Queen Elizabeth I. There was a rumour that Dudley had arranged for his servant, Anthony Forster, to kill Robsart so that Dudley could marry the queen. In Yeames’s scene, Forster is shown pretending to discover Robsart’s body, having suffocated her and thrown her down the stairs. Despite the rumours circulating in the royal court at the time, the coroner ruled that Robsart’s death was an accident. Dudley and Queen Elizabeth I never went on to marry. Gallery label, August 2018
