Richard Diebenkorn made this ink drawing of a standing nude, and I find myself thinking about what it must have been like to make. Did he pause and look, then pause and draw? Or was he trying to capture the figure in one swift go? I imagine him circling the model. Squinting. Always searching for the perfect line, or a contour that explains it all. Look at the ink. So dark against the paper. Each mark is bold and definite, and I love the way the lines sometimes trail off, suggesting a quick flick of the wrist. He really understood how to see and draw with a certain economy, it reminds me of Matisse. And, as with all drawings, it makes me want to grab a pen and find out for myself.
