Editor: This is Rirkrit Tiravanija’s "Atlas I" from 1995, a mixed-media work including photography, and, well, a definite Postmodern vibe. It’s a grid of seemingly random photographs. Honestly, it gives me a sense of disorientation, like flipping through someone’s travel journal who never stays in one place. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Disorientation... I like that. For me, "Atlas I" acts as a visual poem about globalization, about the compression of space and time. The images are indeed disparate – cityscapes, landscapes, interiors – but they all exist within the same network, connected by flows of people, goods, and information. Editor: So it’s not just randomness; there’s a connection being implied? Is it supposed to represent a particular journey, or a… state of mind? Curator: I don't think it's meant to depict a specific journey, but rather a general condition. It's that feeling of being everywhere and nowhere, of being connected to a global network while still feeling adrift. Think of the "Atlas" reference, referencing an overview – a complete system – as well as an antiquated book of maps, hinting at older ways of seeing. The installation aspect – how these are displayed and encountered – is crucial to its conceptual intent. I wonder if this arrangement provides more, or less clarity, given its almost fragmented feel. What do you think? Editor: That makes a lot of sense! The grid format almost overwhelms you with information. So, is the ‘mixed media’ aspect more than just photographs? Does it suggest…like, the internet itself, being this jumbled collection of images? Curator: Exactly! The medium mirrors the message. For Tiravanija, I believe, the presentation – its site specificity – is just as important. Editor: This makes me think about how artists use ordinary pictures in a not-so-ordinary manner to prompt more thoughts, like hidden passages into globalization and all its feelings. Curator: Precisely, it shows how everyday items become incredibly meaningful in the hands of an observant mind!
