Curatorial notes

Giovanni Fattori captured this sunset on the sea with oils on a small panel. The setting sun, an age-old symbol of closure and transition, dominates the canvas with its fiery hues bleeding into the sky. Consider its journey through art: from ancient Egyptian solar barques ferrying souls to the afterlife to Romantic paintings where sunsets mirror the artist’s inner turmoil. Here, the lone figure standing at the water’s edge evokes contemplation. He is facing the sea as if confronting the vastness of existence. This figure, Rückenfigur, invites us to project our own emotions onto the scene. The sunset, however, is not just an end. Like the cyclical nature of myth, it promises a dawn. Fattori’s painting captures this eternal return. It’s a reminder of how symbols evolve, carrying echoes of the past into the present.
