Hendrick Hondius I created this drawing, Boerenhoeve te Wijnegem, some time between the late 16th and mid-17th century. Hondius was born in Duffel, near Antwerp, during a time of significant religious and political conflict in the Low Countries. During this time, the Protestant Reformation was underway, creating a schism within the Catholic Church. Antwerp, where Hondius spent much of his early life, was a major center of trade and culture, but also a site of intense religious and political strife. This drawing depicts a farmhouse in Wijnegem, a village near Antwerp. The scene captures a moment of everyday life in the countryside, but is framed through the lens of the artist’s cultural and historical context. The attention to detail in the architecture and the surrounding landscape evokes a sense of place and belonging, but may also carry a subtle commentary on the social and political realities of the time, in which the sense of 'home' was very much in flux.
