Editor: Leo Gestel’s “Rokende vrouw,” or "Smoking Woman," a pencil drawing created around 1930, possesses such a pensive, almost haunting mood. I am particularly struck by its sketch-like quality; you can almost see the artist working. What stands out to you? Curator: What strikes me first is the sheer economy of line – Gestel manages to convey so much with so little. The sitter’s gaze is averted, as if lost in thought, perhaps contemplating the ephemeral nature of smoke, of life itself. Notice how the hatching creates depth. It’s almost dreamlike, don't you think? The heavy-lidded eyes evoke something otherworldly, not quite here. I see someone grappling, turning away… Is that your take, as well? Editor: I can definitely see the “otherworldly” aspect now that you mention it. Her gaze is intense! I hadn't focused so much on the hatching technique creating such a dreamlike state, I was just focused on the line and figuration. Curator: It is that starkness combined with figuration that is uniquely modern, especially during that interwar period of uncertainty. Everything on its head. Gestel captured something essential. Perhaps that’s the mark of great art, leaving you with a lingering feeling, a question hanging in the air. Does she make you want to grab a smoke and think? Editor: She definitely does. Looking closer, I think the artist intentionally placed this figure against the dark background to create a mysterious but modern atmosphere. This piece has given me a lot to think about! Curator: Agreed, me too. I think it really opens a window to the early twentieth century of change, questioning, searching for new perspectives, and modern approaches. It's exciting isn't it?
