Bernadette Resha's 'Love of Fall' feels like it was built up layer by layer, a real material dance with the canvas. I can imagine Resha in her studio, maybe on a crisp day, with fall leaves swirling outside, building the painting up in a collage-like process. It has got these autumn colours, oranges and greens, that bleed into each other like watercolors on damp paper. Then there are these mosaic-like circles, stuck on, creating a relief, like the leaves have been fossilized in amber. These are like a conversation between painting and sculpture, flatness and depth, and that's pretty cool. I’m imagining Resha balancing the composition, thinking, “Where should the leaves go? How much texture is too much?" There is a whole world of leaf paintings out there, and this one really stands out. Painters are always talking to each other, even across generations. Resha and her 'Love of Fall' speaks to this idea of art as an ongoing experiment, a real, lived process, and invites us to get lost in the beauty of imperfection.
