Edward Avedisian made this untitled painting with big sweeping marks and a bright, poppy palette, probably in his studio somewhere. I bet he was thinking about color, surface, and movement – how one layer peeks through another, how the eye travels. Those diagonals – they kind of remind me of Franz Kline, but way more cheerful, way more California. Look how the red sort of floats, almost like a screen print, but definitely made with the hand. I can imagine Avedisian layering these washes, letting them bleed and blend, each gesture informing the next. It’s like he’s building a world out of color, line, and transparency, and just kept going until it felt right. It's all part of a long, gorgeous conversation that artists have been having for centuries and continue to have: an ongoing exchange, inspiring each other, one painting at a time.
