Editor: Here we have Hendrik Spilman's 1754 print, "Gezichten op slot Ostende en de stad Goes," rendered in ink and engraving on paper. I find the cityscape in the lower half particularly charming—almost dreamlike in its rendering. What details jump out to you in this piece? Curator: Ah, yes! Spilman has captured the spirit of Goes with such precision. The architecture itself whispers stories of merchants and mariners, doesn’t it? Imagine walking those streets, the air thick with the scent of the sea. I’m particularly drawn to the sky—notice how Spilman uses delicate lines to suggest depth and atmosphere. It feels vast, almost infinite above those clustered buildings. Almost makes you wonder what was going on in his world. It makes one contemplate the permanence of the image, juxtaposed with our own brief existences. What feelings does the baroque style evoke for you? Editor: It's definitely different from more modern, photorealistic styles. I think it brings a certain grandeur. And that element of time definitely speaks to me. Considering it’s an engraving, a medium often used for reproduction, how do you think that influenced its purpose? Curator: Exactly. The engraving technique would allow his art to become somewhat of a postcard in its day - think of how people might’ve experienced “views” like this. By understanding Spilman’s choice of this specific medium, and baroque, Dutch-golden-age aesthetic, we are almost transported back to his present. One begins to question if anything’s changed...or if we, today, are mere ghosts reliving someone’s else present. Editor: It’s amazing to consider how much history and thought is packed into one piece of art. Curator: Absolutely! It is these moments, staring at such detailed views, that you appreciate how art lets us glimpse across centuries!
