Robert Schuerer made this 'Glass Vase' drawing sometime in the 20th century, and what grabs me is the color and the light, and the way the two play off each other. It's like Schuerer set himself the challenge of capturing something fleeting, like how light moves through a colored object. I love the way the silvery base contrasts with the ruby red glass. The base feels solid and grounded, while the glass part seems almost liquid, especially with that frilly edge at the top. You can almost feel the smoothness of the glass and the cooler touch of the metal. Look at how Schuerer uses the shading to give the illusion of depth and roundness. It's all about light and shadow, pushing and pulling the surface to create a sense of volume. This makes me think of Giorgio Morandi's still life paintings where he took everyday objects and turned them into these amazing studies of form and light. Both artists are interested in capturing how we see and experience the world. What do you think?
