This is an early image, Paard en wagen op een landweg, met op de achtergrond een dorp, by Alexis Mazourine, who was active in Moscow at the turn of the 20th century. The image is printed on paper, using a process involving light-sensitive chemistry. Mazourine was clearly a master of this relatively new technology. The image is made of a very limited tonal range, almost like a woodcut, lending the photograph a timeless quality. The surface is matte and rather coarse, which only adds to the image's visual appeal. It documents a horse and wagon traveling on a rural road, with a village in the background, capturing a moment in time that speaks to the changing landscape of Russia during this era. The technology of photography, then as now, was inextricably tied to wider social issues of labor, politics, and consumption. By emphasizing the materials, making, and historical context, we can fully understand the artwork's meaning, challenging traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
