Anthony Caro made this sculpture, "Twenty Four Hours," with steel. The dark, earthy palette and the way the steel has been cut and welded together makes me think about the artist's actions. How they've labored, coaxed, and maybe even struggled with this material to bring this form into being. I sympathize with him, you know? I imagine him wrestling with these heavy pieces of steel, trying to find the right balance, the perfect tension between the shapes. There’s that triangular form, bisected down the middle, paired with a square and a circle that feel both geometric and strangely organic at the same time. That circle, especially, has a kind of gravitational pull; it attracts the other shapes into its orbit, creating a dynamic relationship between them. The way Caro has joined these elements—a weld here, a cut there—speaks to a kind of conversation, an exchange of ideas that he is having with the material itself. I see Caro in dialogue with other sculptors, past and present. Each one trying to push the boundaries of what sculpture can be. It's a reminder that art-making is an ongoing conversation, a constant exchange of ideas across time.
