Here we have a printed image of the Gildehuis der Vrije Schippers in Gent, Belgium, dating back to 1880. The architecture of the Guildhall itself is rich in symbolism. Notice the elaborate stepped gables. This motif—the gable—appears as a constant striving upwards, a reaching for something beyond the material world. We see it echoing across centuries, from ancient ziggurats to Gothic cathedrals. The gable is an assertion of identity, a physical manifestation of a community's aspirations and values, recurring throughout history, adapting, yet forever rooted in the collective unconscious. This echoes through time as an enduring symbol of collective memory, continually reshaped, yet eternally linked to our deep, subconscious desires for belonging and transcendence.
