This photograph, titled *Gezicht op een laan in het Kloosterbos, Limburg*, or *View of an Avenue in the Kloosterbos, Limburg*, was created anonymously. The black and white image depicts a road leading into a forest. Consider for a moment, what it means to be anonymous. How might the identity of the artist shape or reflect societal issues? Looking at this photograph, I am struck by how the artist highlights the dichotomy between nature and civilization. Roads have always been about conquest. The road is this relentless march into the forest. It is a permanent way of dividing the land. Even without knowing the date, this feels like it comes from the late 19th or early 20th century. Forests have long been sites of refuge, especially for those marginalized by society. This image then raises critical questions about land use, access, and the complex relationship between human progress and environmental impact. In that sense, it also touches on themes of power and control.
