This letter to Willem Bogtman was written in 1925 by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst with dark ink on light paper. Imagine Roland Holst hunched over his desk, nib scratching across the page, each stroke a deliberate act of connection. You can almost feel the weight of his thoughts pressing down, forming these tight, looping words. It’s so intimate, like eavesdropping on a conversation. I can imagine him pausing, searching for the right phrase, maybe even crossing something out and starting again. He is writing to his friend about art and life. The dark ink creates a strong contrast against the light paper, which almost feels like a drawing. Like a lot of artists, Roland Holst seems to work in multiple mediums, and is having a conversation with his friend, but also maybe with himself, and with the act of artmaking.
