This photograph, of soldiers walking through a ruined city, was made by an anonymous artist, and it captures a scene of stark devastation. The image is black and white, drained of color. The eye is drawn to the rubble and debris, but is soon met by a regimented line of soldiers. There's something deeply unsettling about the contrast between the organic chaos of destruction, and the straight line of the soldiers - a symbol of control and order. The road itself seems to embody this tension: one side torn and broken, the other a smooth, unbroken path. I think of Goya and his Disasters of War. Both share a focus on the grim realities of conflict, unflinching, and raw. Neither offers easy answers or heroic narratives, but instead invites us to confront the uncomfortable truths of human experience.
