Editor: Here we have a plum pit. I know, it doesn't sound that exciting, but this little seed was recovered from the shipwreck of the Hollandia, a Dutch East India Company ship that sank before 1748. It looks pretty… humble. A survivor, I guess you could say? What do you make of this modest piece of history? Curator: Humble, yes, but think of all it has witnessed! Bobbing in the belly of that ship, perhaps someone enjoyed the sweet flesh of its fruit before disaster struck. Now it’s here, years later, this tiny object, and it sparks all these questions. Is this realism? Is it truth, is it reality? Editor: A very grounded truth! I wouldn’t call it exciting… Curator: It's like holding a conversation with time itself. Think about what journeys this little pit embarked on. Perhaps its journey mimics our own struggles in some grand cosmic joke. After all, how much are we that prune pit, and how much of the majestic and ill fated ship? What do you think? Editor: I never would've thought I'd find so much depth in a plum pit, but I get your point. The simple things often carry the greatest stories. Curator: Absolutely. A quiet contemplation can hold infinite worth. Editor: Thanks, this has really changed my perspective on "still life." Curator: My pleasure. And who knew we could squeeze so much out of one little plum pit?
