This small, square photograph, Sailboats, was made by Robert Frank, who you may know from his book, *The Americans*. Frank has this way of seeing something ordinary and making it sing. In this print, the tonal range feels so considered. Look at the way the sky shifts from bright at the top to a band of mid-tone gray, before resolving into the inky sea. The masts of the sailboats are almost like vertical pencil lines that anchor the composition, like a Cy Twombly scribble. Photography is often seen as a medium that captures a moment in time. But here, it’s the mood that feels so present. It reminds me of an Agnes Martin painting, that quietness, that hum. You can almost hear the lapping of the water against the boats. The photo has a painterly quality, an emphasis on surface and tone. The horizon line is soft and indistinct, dissolving into a gentle haze. It embraces ambiguity, like all good art should.
