Editor: So this watercolor, "Gezicht op de Monto Rosso bij het klooster San Nicolo d'Arena dichtbij de plaats Nicolosi," by Louis Ducros, created in 1778, it’s… peaceful. There's this sort of restrained beauty in the landscape. What strikes you about it? Curator: What strikes me is how carefully Ducros is framing a very specific, curated vision of nature, consistent with Neoclassical ideals. We're seeing nature, yes, but nature organized and presented for consumption by a particular, usually elite, audience. Think about the rise of the Grand Tour, and the market for picturesque views. Editor: The Grand Tour? Curator: Exactly! Aristocrats journeying across Europe, collecting experiences and souvenirs. This watercolor isn't just a pretty picture, it's a commodity within a broader system of travel and cultural exchange. Where does he choose to depict the monastery from? And why include those particular elements? Editor: I see… he's not showing just anything. He's controlling the narrative. Like the stairs, framing the middle-ground lush plants behind the retaining wall. I suppose that creates this sense of measured observation. Curator: Precisely. And consider the political implications of landscape art in the late 18th century. It's a way of possessing and defining territory, reinforcing certain social hierarchies and aesthetic values. Do you feel a different viewing of this work than before? Editor: Absolutely. I saw a nice landscape. Now I see the social forces that helped create the landscape and how we’re meant to view it. It is always fascinating.
