Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this sketch for a lamp, probably in the early 20th century, with graphite on paper. Look at these curving lines and the shapes emerging from them. I imagine Cachet's hand moving across the page, trying out an idea, adjusting it, and then letting it flow. You can almost feel the give and take of the design process. The lamp seems to float, held together by these delicate lines. I wonder what Cachet was thinking about when he made this sketch. Was he thinking about the light the lamp would cast, or the space it would inhabit? It reminds me of the way Cy Twombly used line to create a sense of movement and energy. These sketches are not just about function. They speak to a deeper human desire to create beauty and meaning in the world. Artists are constantly inspired by each other’s work, across time and place, aren’t they?
