This is a painting by Yui Yaegashi, made with what looks like carefully applied paint. I can almost feel the artist moving around the canvas, trying to find the right balance, the right rhythm of colors. It makes me think about the simple pleasure of putting colors next to each other and seeing what happens. What's the simplest thing you can do? Color! Like a child's game. I imagine Yaegashi thinking about Agnes Martin while making this, or maybe even Sol Lewitt, but in a more playful way. It’s like she’s asking, “How can I make something ordered, but still let it breathe?" Each color feels chosen with care, yet there's a casualness, too. Maybe she mixed each colour by hand, building up layers until she had just the shade she wanted. There is such a conversation going on between painters all the time. Each one adds something new.
