Curatorial notes

This stone sculpture depicts Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and transformation. Shiva's serene expression invites contemplation, while the gesture of his hands holding an object invites both reverence and introspection. Consider the way this motif is represented in other art forms across cultures. The folded hands, a sign of supplication, appear in Ancient Greek votive sculptures, as well as Christian paintings. The hands themselves represent a complex array of emotions. Here, they denote reverence, devotion, and the turning inward. Notice how Shiva's gaze engages the viewer, creating a link between the physical artwork and the viewer's inner experience. The statue serves as a reminder of the cyclical nature of existence and the continuous interplay between destruction and creation. It is not just a representation but a powerful force engaging viewers on a subconscious level.
