Philippus Jacobus Brepols created this print called "Het Buiten Leven," or "The Outdoor Life," at an unknown date using etching and possibly some hand-colouring. It invites us to consider the cultural values of the Netherlands during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The print depicts various scenes of leisure and rural life. Consider how each vignette idealizes different aspects of nature, such as hunting, keeping animals or landscape views. These scenes could reflect a growing interest in naturalism and the countryside that emerged during the Enlightenment. Yet they may also uphold conservative notions of social hierarchy, with the "common" man interacting with the "natural" world. To truly understand the meaning of the artwork, one would need to examine Dutch social history, popular culture, and artistic traditions of this period. Only then can we fully appreciate the complex dialogue that Brepols establishes between nature, culture, and social order.
