Jacoba Henrietta Lochman van Königsfeldt made this landscape with farm and cattle using graphite and paper. Notice how the artist has used graphite to create a soft, almost hazy atmosphere. The fine lines and delicate shading bring out the rustic charm of the farm, while the graphite gives a sense of depth. Consider the labour involved in creating such a detailed work by hand, and Königsfeldt’s deep familiarity with the landscape. Königsfeldt was working at a time when rural life was romanticized and celebrated in art, offering a glimpse into the slower pace of agricultural life and the traditional craft of farming. But she also engaged with the history of fine art landscape drawing. By bringing our attention to the materials, techniques, and cultural context, we can start to challenge the traditional boundaries between art and craft.
