Walter Crane created "Prince Charming In The Forest" at the height of the Aesthetic Movement in Britain, a cultural phenomenon that championed beauty and art for art's sake. Crane was deeply influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, which sought to revive the artistic styles of the medieval era. You can see this influence in the flat perspective and decorative elements of the illustration. "Prince Charming In The Forest" shows a male figure cutting his way through the forest, but it also feels like a comment on the era’s gender norms. Crane presents us with a vision of idealized masculinity where Prince Charming is not only brave but also handsome. Crane challenges the traditional representations of gender roles by placing a male character in a typically female dominated narrative. This artwork invites us to think about the narratives that shape our perceptions, and asks us to reconsider our own beliefs.
