Maynard Dixon made "Forgotten Man" with what looks like oil paint and a restrained palette. I love the way he builds up these muted tones, it’s like he's trying to find the color within the gray, isn't it? The surface feels smooth, but when you look closer, you can see these confident brushstrokes laying down the weight of those passing feet. It’s really evocative! Take a look at the man's hands, they are so still and heavy, painted with these short, deliberate marks. You can almost feel the weight of his thoughts, this is a really great piece of observation. Dixon’s focus reminds me of some of the urban landscapes painted by the Ashcan School, those gritty glimpses of everyday life. But while they celebrated the hustle, Dixon captures something more introspective. It’s a reminder that even in the busiest streets, there are stories we often overlook.
