Gerrit Groenewegen created this print of various ships on tumultuous waters using etching. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Dutch were major players in global maritime trade and naval power. In this print, we see ships battling against a stormy sea, an image reflecting both the might and the vulnerability of the Dutch maritime endeavors. These ships were crucial for trade, exploration, and also, unfortunately, for the transport of enslaved people. The economic prosperity of the Netherlands at this time was deeply entangled with the exploitation and suffering caused by the transatlantic slave trade. Consider for a moment the human stories behind these vessels: the sailors braving dangerous conditions, the merchants seeking fortune, and the countless Africans who were forcibly brought to the Americas. The turbulent waters mirror the unstable foundations upon which much of the Dutch Golden Age was built, and remind us to reflect on the complexities of history.
