This Serigraph, NC13, was made by Patrick Nagel, but the date is unknown. Look how minimal Nagel is. There’s nothing fussy here, it's very paired back, streamlined. The flat blocks of colour, that smooth surface… it almost feels like you could run your hand over it without feeling a thing. But that’s part of the trick, isn’t it? How do you create depth and emotion with so little? Take the horse’s eye, for example, that tiny blue dot amidst all the grey. It’s a small splash of color, but it pulls you right in. You can almost feel what the horse feels. Nagel’s work always reminds me of classic Japanese prints. There's that same elegance and simplicity, but with a totally different vibe. Both are about capturing the essence of a subject, not necessarily the details. And somehow, in that simplicity, there’s a whole world of feeling.
