Beverly Chichester painted this watercolour of a glass dish on a stand sometime in the 20th century. It's quite simple; a straightforward rendering in shades of brown and white. I wonder what Chichester was thinking as she created this? It looks as though she’s trying to capture the play of light across the dish's surface, with these bold strokes of brown suggesting depth and volume, a nod to the traditions of still life painting. You can almost feel the smooth, cool surface of the glass. It reminds me a little of Giorgio Morandi, with its quiet focus on everyday objects and the subtle beauty they can hold. Artists often work in dialogue with one another, echoing and reinterpreting ideas across time. Like a visual echo, each brushstroke is a continuation of a conversation that spans centuries.
