Hermanus Petrus Schouten created "Plein in het dorp Zuilen" using pen in gray ink and watercolor. Schouten, born in 1747, lived in a time when the Dutch Republic was transitioning into a more centralized state, marked by social and economic changes. This artwork depicts an idyllic village scene, yet it subtly reinforces social hierarchies. Note the clear separation in the depiction of figures: the well-dressed couple standing near the horse-drawn carriage versus the commoners working by the canal. Schouten seems to suggest a world where everyone occupies a specific place, reflecting the social stratification of the time. The picturesque quality of the scene masks the complex power dynamics at play. What is not shown here can be just as telling, leaving us to wonder about the lives and stories of those who may have been excluded from such representations of Dutch village life.
